Make your own Kombucha with a microbiologist
Price include a full Kombucha kit available to pick up prior class.
Day1: Online workshop: making Kombucha (Saturday 10am-12pm)
Students will meet in a zoom class to learn to make Kombucha tea in their own kitchen using the materials provided. Student will prepare clean vessels for the kombucha culture, make culture media, handle Kombucha SCOBY, and grow the culture in the appropriate environment. An introductory microbiology class on Kombucha will be given during the class. Students will be asked take photos/videos to monitor the Kombucha fermentation process.
Day 2. Microbiology Laboratory (Sunday 9am-12.30pm)
In the hands-on laboratory experience, students will learn to use a light microscopy to examine Kombucha SCOBY in the lab. Several imaging techniques will be taught, including live imaging and imaging of fix samples. Student will perform Gram Staining on microorganisms, and learn to take high resolution images and movies using their smartphone. During the class student will also have the opportunity to explore a wide range of biological specimens such as fruit fly, pollen, lung slices, and much more!
